At first glance, Gigabyte’s 17.3″ 1080p laptop looks like an oversized business machine. It is subdued and skinny, hiding away its Nvidia GTX 970M gaming chops. But don’t let that fool you, this machine was made with gaming in mind.

Quiet and cool

Gaming notebooks tend to give themselves away in one of several ways: they either look super chunky and covered in bright colours. They also tend to be the noisiest, hottest machines in the room. The P57W doesn’t have that issue. It runs at a nice cool temperature, hitting 60 degrees during benchmarks, compared to other machines hitting 90 during the crunches. It made quite a change having a quiet machine for testing and the people around you if you use this in common areas will appreciate you not using a jet engine.

Power pocket

The GTX 970M is nowhere near powerful enough for 4K and other Ultra HD shenanigans, and this machine takes that into account. A nice 1080p IPS panel might not sound attractive, but it is exactly what you want to be running games on. The screen is sturdy, with no artifacts present when prodding the lid. The build quality is good with solid feeling pieces that move when you want them too. Some might want a bit more metal for a machine in this price bracket, but keeping the machine under 3Kg seems a worthwhile trade-off.

For the most part this notebook speaks of clever design. The keyboard is set to the back of the device, leaving ample wrist-rest room. Cooling systems make for a cool, quiet operation. The power button is placed away from any mistaken press. Then the speaker outputs are placed in a position that your hands block out the sound when resting on the laptop.

The P57W is subdued and elegant, which is something I like. It gets the job done without a big noise or bright colours everywhere without weighing so much that travelling with it is a pain. This is for someone who wants to play games without carrying something heavy around in places without access to extra monitors and it does that job really well.

I like so many things that it would take me several lifetimes to get through them all. So I tell you about them, so you can choose where your time and money gets spent.
