Sturdy keyboard | Great sound | GPU runs pretty cool

Trackpad gets in the way when hands are resting on WASD | 960M could offer more punch

Bottom Line

MSI’s 960M machine shows promise, but doesn’t quite hit all the right notes.

As much as I try to resist it, computers keep moving into the mobile arena. It is handy to have all your work programs and files with you and sometimes a few spare minutes playing a game before heading out are really all too precious after a long day.

MSI’s GE72 aims for that market: people who work but also play a lot of games. This Intel Core i7-5700HQ laptop packs some punch with its GeForce GTX 960M. The machine runs pretty quietly, the dual fans kicking into gear without any bad whining sounds.

Having a proper keyboard makes a large difference. Anyone who has had cramped hands after typing on a laptop keyboard or eventually switched out to a USB keyboard will know just how much this matters. The backlighting is really handy for typing in whatever darkened environs you might encounter during your travels, from airplanes where the reading light never seem to shine in the right place, to darkened presentations halls.

The machine gets 4,100 in Firestrike, just 100 marks below what the 870M pushes out. Running on max settings in Batman: Arkham Origins, this is what the laptop achieves.

With some tweaking, (like dropping off TXAA)  a much more respectable 47, 96, 70 was reached, which was more than acceptable for gaming.

MSI offers a pretty solid machine, though with some shopping you can find similarly specced, or slightly better specced machines with a lower price tag. I was hoping for more punch in gaming but it still offers a great option if you want to play games and stay mobile. I know my huge chassis will never go along on a business trip.

I like so many things that it would take me several lifetimes to get through them all. So I tell you about them, so you can choose where your time and money gets spent.

Not too shabby a machine actually. Pity the gaming performance is not as much as I’d expected it would be
